Giving a piece of gemstone jewellery to mark important wedding anniversaries can be a wonderful way to celebrate. Each wedding anniversary is celebrated with a different gemstone all of which are listed below.

 

 

Giving particular gifts on wedding anniversaries is thought to have originated in Central Europe. In medieval Germany, friends customarily presented a wife with a wreath of silver on her 25th wedding anniversary, the silver representing the harmony that had been necessary to last so long. Similarly, after fifty years the wife was presented with a golden wreath. Thus the silver wedding and golden wedding arose, and this has been elaborated upon in modern times – in 1922, Mrs. Emily Post, a well-known author on the subject of modern etiquette, wrote about eight anniversaries that required traditional gifts. There are records from 1800 that show the modern list has expanded to include the first fifteen years, and every five years after that. In some European countries, a copper wreath is used to celebrate twelve and a half years of marriage.

 

Oddly, there are two Diamond Anniversaries – one at 60 years and the other at 75. The 75th is the original diamond anniversary, and the 60th was added when Queen Victoria celebrated her Diamond Jubilee on the 60th anniversary of accession to the throne in 1897.

 

Over time, the tradition of celebrating anniversaries and of giving traditional gifts has developed a list of metals and stones, usually found in the form of fine jewellery, that represent the strength and commitment of the relationship with their durability and beauty.
